High Country opening up!!!!

Rode Scotch Creek to the CT, across to Salt and down yesterday. Great shape, considering how early we are for any access. Definitely needs a lot more traffic to smooth out all the elk prints and winter ruts, but only 4 down trees between top of Scotch and Salt turn-off. Salt was actually in pretty good shape too, with a few down trees. The new re-route sucks though, as it was built by USFS and meant for hikers. Turns are ridiculously sharp and not laid out well at all. Lots of effort needed to make it a real MTB trail or just bypass on old route.
Can't wait to get up on Blackhawk!!!
Cheers all and see you in the high country this summer.
Keep smiling!!!

Boggy Draw and Stoner Mesa update - 6/15/10

Boggy Draw is in absolutely fantastic shape, especially Bean Canyon loop being in the best shape in years. Head to Dolores and take a lap, grab your snacks at the Grocery or stop by DRB for a post ride beverage!!
A bunch of us rode Stoner Mesa on Sunday, under threatening skies, but overall we had a great day. Still a ton of work to do on clearing downed trees (guesstimates of around 40 down), but the trail condition is great, with only a few wet spots about mid-ride. Once the trees get cleared out, Stoner will be in great shape.
The weekend rains have really helped Phil's World also, as it really set down the dust and firmed up the tread again. Lap last night was a blast!!!
Keep smiling all and see you on the trails.

Phil's, Boggy and Beyond!

Wow, summer has arrived with a vengeance! Daytime temps in the 90's have us all running for the hills. To that end, Boggy Draw area trails are in fantastic shape, especially Bean Canyon. The wildflowers on the mesa on Italian are spectacular.
Stoner Mesa is in great shape, although still bunches of trees down. We will try to get in there and assist the USFS with some cutting soon.
I have heard mixed reports on Colorado Trail riding, from clear and dry to still snowy and muddy in spots, but this weeks temps ought to help dry it all out quickly. Yeeeee - ha!! Almost high country season again.
Keep smiling and enjoy!!

Hot Weather!

Summer, suddenly, which means Girls' Rides will be at Boggy Draw. On Wednesday, June 9th at 530 we'll be riding Italian Canyon because we've heard the wildflowers are great right now.
Phil's World will be hot during the day but still good for morning and evening rides. Yes, we will be removing the race mileage signs.

Girls' Rides

At Phil's World for now. Will move to Boggy Draw as weather warms. Wednesday evening, 530pm. We'll divide into two groups: a slower ride and a faster ride, both social.

Phil's and Boggy Draw Update for week of May 17th

Hello All,
Phil's - We recently completed a little re-route on Coco Race, built to eliminate two of the tighter corners on that section. Still quite soft but the rain this week should really help. All the trails are in great shape! Even the race course, although Moki Climb needs a bit of rehabilitation work.
Boggy Draw - Everything is in good shape, with a few "boggy" spots on Maverick still. Italian, Boggy and Bean are all in great shape.
We will get up and take a look at Stoner Mesa and Bear Creek areas in the next week or two so check back for updates on those areas.
Cheers!!!

Post-race on Phil's World

It was a wildly successful 12 Hours of Mesa Verde 2010. The race course (Lemonhead and Stinking Springs and Ribcage) should be well beat-in after 600 racers went round and round. After a couple of days of moisture this week the trails will be ready for the sunny weekend ahead.  We have crews designated to clean up the flagging and any litter on the course. Please help by picking up any litter you find out there. Thank you!

Boggy Draw Report and Phil's World Reminder

Boggy Draw trail is starting to dry out but there are still plenty of muddy spots, and standing water. Not suggested for riding just yet. It should be less boggy by next weekend, which would be handy since Phil's World will be closed to non-racers on Saturday, May 8th. But if you're not racing, sign up to volunteer for the 12 Hours of Mesa Verde race at 12Hoursofmesaverde.com.
Update: Also got a report from Sand Canyon on May 1- great shape!

Trail conditions and a little re-route (4/28/10)

Phil's World continues to be in AMAZING condition and we are expecting a little bit more inclement weather this weekend to help pack it in even more!!!!
We completed a little re-route last night, altering the sharp right hand hairpin turn on the climb up to Abajo, creating a nice quick flowy section!!
Keep smiling and see everyone out on the trails!

Phil's World

Beautiful weekend. Trail is great!  Flagging has been put up on the race course for the 12 Hours of Mesa Verde race on May 8. The course includes Lemonhead and Stinking Springs. Please do not remove race flagging- it's yellow/green flagging on the right for the course, and bright red flagging on the left marking dangerous spots.

Phil's trail still in great shape

All trails at Phil's World are doing well. The Trust Loop makes a nice warm-up lap.  Riders are needed on the new 2More section- find it on the left after a rock drop on Osprey Alley.  Beware of the weather coming in; please do not create new trail by riding around muddy parts.

Also, Boggy Draw is still very boggy, no riding yet.

Weekend Report

Happy bikers say that Ledges Loop is melted out. Main loop getting very dry, even dusty but tread all around is still in good shape.  How was your weekend ride?

Phil's World Update for April, 9th, 2010

Welcome to Summer!! Wow - straight into summer from winter, and that quick transition has really helped Phil's melt out quickly and the tread has packed in nicely. LemonHead and Stinking Springs are in GREAT shape. Ledges is still muddy in spots but should be rideable by this weekend. The new Trust Loop is also in great shape.
27 cars at trailhead at lunch today, so Phil's season is in full effect.
Rock on and keep smiling!!!!

Phil's Update 4/7/2010

Wow!!!!
Phil's is in amazing shape!! Come one, come all, let's go riding!!!
All loops except Ledge's are in really great shape. Ledge's is still very muddy, so please do not ride it yet. May be close to ready by this weekend - will post an update on Friday the 9th!
There are two new loops completed last fall:
1. Trust Loop - starts and ends at SE corner of parking area. This is a 3.7 mile easy trail to help folks build "trust" in their skills but is also super fun for advanced riders. We will be working an additional loop off this Trust Loop this spring, so look for news later.
2. "2 More" - is a new extension to the end of the trail system, taking off near the end of Osprey Alley, just before you return to the parking area. This is a 2 mile trail that weaves through the woods and ends up finishing on the new Trust Loop, so you can also ride that or simply return to the parking area!! Super fun, pump course action!!
Enjoy!!

Phil's World Trail update for 3/31

Hello All,
Trail conditions at Phil's World are actually pretty good. Still a few muddy spots. Have not ridden Ledges Loop yet as that still has snow covering portions on northern slopes. Probably another week of high temps will free it up from snow, but it will still be very muddy. Please do not abuse it and walk through sections that are really muddy. Thanks!
LemonHead, the main Abajo section (Ribcage) and the new Trust Loop are all in good shape. Stinking Springs still has some muddy sections but is passable.
Cheers and enjoy the spring riding!

Sand Canyon 13 March 2010

Here is update on Sand Canyon, from Kiviok who “attempted” to ride on Saturday.

Trail report.   A greasy muddy mess!  I had to push my bike through most of the modified ride stopping to clear the mud that had caked in the fork and rear triangle making my wheels unable to rotate.   Not worth riding or hiking. 1 hour of hike/bike with at least 1 hour of cleanup.  I did clear most of the steps despite the extra weight and lack of traction.  Didn't clear the 301, and face planted on the drop off right before that due to the greasy mess.  We need 1 week without precipitation with a lot of warm sunny days, and the trail might be ridable again.

Testing 1 2 3

Still snowy.  Phil's World is NOT ready to ride.  Sand Canyon probably good.
